Hoax or not; how we’d all like to quit that irksome job...

by Sarah 24. August 2010 11:18
On Tuesday 10th August, a series of pictures began circulating throughout millions of inboxes around the globe. Links spread like wildfire through Twitter, Facebook, IM and Email as people were alerted to the girl who ‘quits job on dry erase board’ and ‘emails entire office’.

The series of 33 pictures were posted on leading ‘photo entertainment’ website, TheChive.com. They showed Jenny posing for a series of pictures holding a dry erase board detailing her resignation, in a rather kick ass way, that propelled her to immediate ‘office legend’ status.

“We received the following photos last night from a person who works with this girl. Her name is Jenny (not confirmed) - we're working our contact for Jenny's last name. Yesterday morning, Jenny quit her job with a (flash)bang by emailing these photos to the entire office, about 20 employees we're told. Awesome doesn't begin to describe this office heroine. Check back as we will be updating if we get more details.”

If you weren’t aware of the viral, you can
check it out here.

The viral took hold immediately and featured on news sites and social media sites across the web, including Tech crunch, but in just as big a whirlwind as it came, the following day The Internet heaved a collective sigh; our dreams had been dashed and the ‘dry erase girl’ turned out to be a hoax, just another viral propelling the perpetrators to instant fame and kudos.

Viral videos and emails are ten a penny it has to be said, but it’s been a long time since I have been sent the same viral by so many of my friends, colleagues and family members. There was something special about the meme that captured the attention of a broad spectrum of society, and when you think about the topic of the viral, it’s not hard to see why. Because It’s: The Dream.

We’ve all had that daydream right? Where you scoop up your possessions in a dramatic fashion, march right up to that
pain in the arse boss and tell him exactly what you think of your low pay and under-appreciated status in the office before storming out, surrounded by rapturous applause. Even when you’ve decided to move on to pastures new and have secured that new position, you know you can’t realistically make a huge scene and risk ruining your references and have your (now ex) employees questioning your sanity.

The ‘dry erase girl’ gave that tiny part of us hope, that this cathartic end to working torment could be executed by a real person, and not just some smirking Hollywood star in the movies. Unfortunately she did not live up to the nation’s daring dream, and will be replaced tomorrow by the bottle cap that has more Facebook friends than Cheryl Cole. But it’s nice to dream, that someone, somewhere has told their cruel, tyrannous boss the ugly truth and lived to tell the tale...

But in all seriousness, for those of you struggling with your job, feeling underpaid, under-appreciated and just downright miserable at work, your new job could be just around the corner. The most productive way to ensure this happens is to have a look what’s out there, rather than inventing those great speeches, which, as much as I hate to say it... should probably be left to the movies and Internet virals.

Many job seekers believe that the best way to increase the chance of getting a job comes through applying for hundreds of vacancies, but this is simply not the case.
