The Art of Job Seeking- How to get the most out of your job search. (Part 2)

by Sarah 8. April 2009 10:44

Following on from yesterday, here’s some more advice on maximising the potential of online jobs websites...

Upload Your CV

The online version of letter bombing employers with your CV, only this time you know they actually want it. Jobs websites that offer this function are partnered with recruitment agencies that have vacancies to fill, so it’s well worth doing.

Most sites will require your CV to be in .doc/.docx or .rtf, which in non-tech speak means your CV should be saved in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) or any other word program whether on the Mac or PC, in rich text format (.rtf when you save it)

Of course if you want to save yourself the hassle of doing this on numerous jobs websites, why don’t you let us do it for you? There’s nothing wrong with a bit of harmless self-promotion, and with our product, it’s worth some shameless advertising! FreeMyCV.com will upload your CV to all our partnered sites, which include the BIG names in the online job market. We will register you with these sites to save you time and effort. If you have specific job needs, we have niche jobs websites and larger general sites, to help find the best job for you. All you need to do is upload your CV and fill in one form with all your job requirements, and we will do the rest.

Registering

Jobs websites will encourage you to register your details, which is a great way of utilising these sites to the full. The website may ask you to fill in a little form about yourself so that they can get an insight into the kind of jobs you are looking for. They will then email you the latest vacancies that are highly targeted to your job requirements.

AllTheTopBananas.com creates a unique user profile of each individual jobseeker. By looking at what you have searched for, from the location to the job type, they will then email you similar vacancies, to see if they are of interest to you.

From my experience of jobs websites, you don’t have to worry about constant email spam; they may send you one a week at most, so your inbox won’t be brimming with unwanted mail.

Twitter

As I have recently become a severe Twitter addict, I thought it deserved a mention. I am sure to give Twitter some more blog time in the future, but for now I’ll keep it brief. Twitter provides a new angle for the online job market. It gives jobs websites the opportunity to tweet their latest vacancies, update you about job-related news and really keep in touch with the users.

Twitter gives people a forum to suggest things for the site, to comment on blogs- the opportunities are endless! The graduate website Milkround.com utilise Twitter really well in this capacity, posting their latest graduate vacancies and graduate news. I can’t talk about Twitter without mentioning my own account for FreeMyCV.com, in which I try and bring you up to speed with my new blog posts, and any recruitment news I happen to stumble on. So do your homework, see who’s out there and give them a follow.
